Compassionate Communication for Veterinary Workplaces
Develop Nonviolent Communication skills to manage conflict and build empathy within your team.

Overview:
This programme will support you to expertly manage conflict with both clients and within your own team.
Carefully created for veterinary teams, by certified Nonviolent Communication trainers, this course helps you:
- Understand clients and your team better
- Enhance your communication through skillful listening and receiving
- Engage with empathy during challenging situations.
The principles and practices of Nonviolent Communication offer a paradigm shift in how we communicate – rather than relying on automatic reactions, you will learn ways to create choice during difficult interactions, allowing a return to calm compassion for ourselves, and clarity with how to proceed.
Who is this course suitable for?
All members of veterinary teams.
Some practices/organisations choose to nominate a smaller group of key individuals who will then be able to champion the practices within their teams
Service classification:
Practices/teams, corporate
Course length
This course is modular, consisting of 4 x 90 minute sessions, together with handouts and reflective practices to complete between sessions. Delivery is usually half online and half in-person.

All the talks I watched on Thursday were amazing, but I especially enjoyed the importance of non-clinical skills development in university and EMS. It was really refreshing and empowering to watch these incredibly inspirational women speak about their journeys to get to where they are now. It was truly eye-opening and awe-inspiring.

‘I was hesitant about it being all virtual and how engaging it would feel, however the tech has been easy to navigate and I haven't had any issues. The networking session was run really well and I enjoyed the opportunity for discussion.‘

‘Amazing and inspiring as always, so many ideas and concepts to take away and take back. Came just at the right time for me when I've maybe been flagging a little professionally. You have all helped stoke that fire and reinvigorate my enthusiasm. Incredibly grateful for this community. Great few days, really enjoyed it, already excited about next year!’

‘The practical day was so helpful. Cat and Sara created an extremely safe environment and were so kind, patient and understanding. Everyone in my group commented on how they felt they could be completely open and share mistakes, silly questions etc.’

“In a busy multi-disciplinary referral hospital like ours, Human Factors plays a key role in team dynamics, staff wellbeing, and ultimately patient care. The support of VetLed has been invaluable in improving our knowledge in this area.
The VetLed team worked with colleagues from across the hospital over an extended period, using observations, frameworks, tools, and techniques that we can take forward on our Human Factors improvement journey.
We are grateful for the support of VetLed and would not hesitate to work with them again in the future.”

“I just wanted to drop you both a note to say, thank you for the sessions you ran for us this and last week. The feedback from our teams has been overwhelmingly positive. The sessions were well delivered, engaging and very useful! It has definitely triggered a couple of other projects we would like to implement later in the year.”

“Training and understanding of how the brain works has encouraged people to be braver and speak out. Staff understand it is better to talk to each other rather than harbour resentment. There is now an overall improvement in tolerance and respect towards each other, particularly where there had been previous issues. People are more confident to suggest ideas and more willing to listen.”

FAQs
This programme consists of 4 x 90 minutes modules. We can tailor the delivery to each team's needs, however typically modules 1 and 2 are delivered online (2-4 weeks apart), and parts 3 and 4 delivered together in-person. In addition, we recommend allowing approx. 30-60 minutes for each module to review the handout material and to complete the individual ‘mini-practice’ exercises.
A further 4 x 90 minute modules focussing on expressing and making compassionate requests is expected to be available from late 2025/early 2026 to any teams who have already completed this course.
