ECC Simulation Day for Veterinary Graduates
Immersive workshop using ECC simulations to develop key non-technical skills.

Overview:
Our immersive simulation day brings non-technical skills vividly to life for delegates, using simulated clinical scenarios.
Delegates partake in simulated ECC cases, putting into practice key non-technical skills such as decision-making under pressure, situational awareness, leadership in an emergency.
These workshops are expertly designed by an ECC diplomat, and led by our team of Human Factors and healthcare simulation specialists, and experienced vets/RVNs.
Immersive simulation:
- Enhances learning and retention through active participation and hands-on experience.
- Creates a safe environment for learning - including learning from mistakes without real-world consequences.
- Provides the chance to re-run a particular skill immediately, building competence and confidence
- Mimics real-world cases preparing delegates for real-world cases.
- Helps delegates manage stress, anxiety and emotional responses in emergency scenarios.
- Facilitates real-time feedback from instructors, and peers.
Expert-led debriefing is a critical component of immersive simulation in healthcare education.
Each simulation is debriefed in detail to enhance retention of information, identify areas of strength and for improvement and reinforce reasoning behind decisions made. Our VetLed course leaders use the debrief to model promoting psychological safety and provide a supportive space to discuss the case without fear of judgment.
By the end of the day, delegates are encouraged to try leading the debrief themselves, a valuable skill which they can take back to their own practice.
Who is this course suitable for?
Veterinarians who have less than 3 years’ experience in practice.
This training can be delivered as part of a graduate programme or to recently graduated vets within a team.
Ideally attendees will previously have attended the ‘Introduction to Human Factors’ workshop for veterinary graduates.

All the talks I watched on Thursday were amazing, but I especially enjoyed the importance of non-clinical skills development in university and EMS. It was really refreshing and empowering to watch these incredibly inspirational women speak about their journeys to get to where they are now. It was truly eye-opening and awe-inspiring.

Wow, what a conversation starter!
The VetLed Civility training was very impactful really focusing in on how our behaviour towards each other affects patient care. VetLed presented theory and hard-hitting stories but also left our team with a system of tackling incivility practice-wide. This course fitted the bill, Thank You!

‘The practical day was so helpful. Cat and Sara created an extremely safe environment and were so kind, patient and understanding. Everyone in my group commented on how they felt they could be completely open and share mistakes, silly questions etc.’

“In a busy multi-disciplinary referral hospital like ours, Human Factors plays a key role in team dynamics, staff wellbeing, and ultimately patient care. The support of VetLed has been invaluable in improving our knowledge in this area.
The VetLed team worked with colleagues from across the hospital over an extended period, using observations, frameworks, tools, and techniques that we can take forward on our Human Factors improvement journey.
We are grateful for the support of VetLed and would not hesitate to work with them again in the future.”

“Training and understanding of how the brain works has encouraged people to be braver and speak out. Staff understand it is better to talk to each other rather than harbour resentment. There is now an overall improvement in tolerance and respect towards each other, particularly where there had been previous issues. People are more confident to suggest ideas and more willing to listen.”

FAQs
Due to the immersive nature of these simulations and scenarios, this training can only be delivered in-person. The location for the training can be agreed prior to booking.
This session can only be delivered as a follow-up to ‘Introduction to Human Factors for Veterinary Graduates’. These sessions have been designed to be delivered together as they make sure that the concepts covered during the initial workshop are then brought to life in the simulated scenarios so that they can be effectively applied in a practice setting.
This offering has been tailored specifically for recent graduate veterinary surgeons. Please contact us directly if you would like to bring our immersive simulation day to your practice team.
