Psychological Safety for Veterinary Teams
Understand how to build psychological safety to improve team performance, wellbeing & patient care

Overview:
Growing evidence demonstrates that psychological safety is the top feature of high-performing teams. This is no less true in veterinary teams. In a high-pressure, complex workplace, it is essential that all members of the team feel safe to speak up with concerns, ideas, and information, without fear of retribution. This is critical for minimising error, improving team/organisational performance and increasing patient safety.
This workshop helps you to identify the relationship between psychological safety and team performance, patient care and clinical outcomes.
You will learn the five principles for a psychologically safe environment in your team, and practical steps everyone can take to contribute to a psychologically safer workplace. Better for people, and for patients!
Who is this course suitable for?
All members of veterinary teams, both clinical and non-clinical.
Although senior team members have a significant impact on psychological safety, it is contributed to by everyone. We advise teams to join this workshop as a whole, to discuss and develop the application of this concept together.

‘I was hesitant about it being all virtual and how engaging it would feel, however the tech has been easy to navigate and I haven't had any issues. The networking session was run really well and I enjoyed the opportunity for discussion.‘

‘Loved every moment. Every session was excellent and engaging. It was energising and encouraging to feel part of just a vibrant community creating change in the profession. Still lots of talks to go through on catch up! No real suggestions as everything was just great.’

“In a busy multi-disciplinary referral hospital like ours, Human Factors plays a key role in team dynamics, staff wellbeing, and ultimately patient care. The support of VetLed has been invaluable in improving our knowledge in this area.
The VetLed team worked with colleagues from across the hospital over an extended period, using observations, frameworks, tools, and techniques that we can take forward on our Human Factors improvement journey.
We are grateful for the support of VetLed and would not hesitate to work with them again in the future.”

“Training and understanding of how the brain works has encouraged people to be braver and speak out. Staff understand it is better to talk to each other rather than harbour resentment. There is now an overall improvement in tolerance and respect towards each other, particularly where there had been previous issues. People are more confident to suggest ideas and more willing to listen.”

“The team have become much more aware of how incivility can affect us and our performance and in general the team are more inclined to discuss this amongst themselves and some team members have grown in confidence to approach peers and deliver feedback when they have perceived someone to be uncivil.”

FAQs
Our taster courses are designed to be delivered online to reduce the travel requirements to allow them to fit within a working day. We do sometimes deliver these sessions in-person, if they are combined with another service such as a Practice Observation Day.
If this taster course landed well, it might be worth considering other areas that relate to psychological safety. You can explore the social aspect by booking our Civility Saves Lives Programme or from a systems perspective (relating to your response error) through our course on Patient Safety and Just Culture.
