Safety Culture Survey
Evidence-based survey to assess and understand aspects of safety culture in your practice.

Overview:
Our survey is an evidence based tool that helps you to understand safety culture in your practice.
The survey asks questions about the beliefs and attitudes of the team regarding patient safety. It gathers views on practice management, teamwork, communication and the factors that contribute to mistakes. The results will provide you with information identifying areas of excellence and opportunities for improvement.
We have extensive experience sensitively facilitating the survey and providing detailed follow-up analysis and support. We guide you through the whole process ensuring that you benefit from tangible learning points and a clear presentation of potential next steps.
Commonplace in human healthcare, this tool has subsequently been validated for use in veterinary practice by the University of Nottingham.
Who is this suitable for?
The survey is sent to all members of the practice team. We advise that the planning, coordination and communication is assigned to a small group of people who can work closely with the VetLed team throughout the project.
Service classification:
Practices & teams, corporate organisations
Structure:
Initial survey window - 2 weeks
Review and analysis - approximately 1 month
Next steps - this might include any combination of focus group discussions, in-practice observations, audits or workshops over the following 6 - 10 months

All the talks I watched on Thursday were amazing, but I especially enjoyed the importance of non-clinical skills development in university and EMS. It was really refreshing and empowering to watch these incredibly inspirational women speak about their journeys to get to where they are now. It was truly eye-opening and awe-inspiring.

‘I was hesitant about it being all virtual and how engaging it would feel, however the tech has been easy to navigate and I haven't had any issues. The networking session was run really well and I enjoyed the opportunity for discussion.‘

“We worked with VetLed for an intensive, and brilliant, year. They created a bespoke programme for our practice after chatting through where we were and where we wanted to be. To say it was helpful is a massive understatement! They know what they are talking about and the observation days they conducted gave us massive insight into areas we had not seen we could improve on. I can't recommend their help and support enough!”

FAQs
This tool has been found to provide highly valuable insights into the attitudes and perception within your team during a ‘snap-shot’ in time. However it is not a complete measure of culture - this is not something that any single tool can deliver. We strongly advise using the information gained from the survey to guide further actions. Next steps might include focus group discussions based on the results, in-practice observations, audits or team workshops. We are happy to advise what might be most beneficial for your workplace.
It can be helpful to do a repeat survey or indeed to repeat it annually, as this will continue to provide valuable information - especially if you start to recognise trends over multiple years. However, we advise not to use this tool as an absolute measurement to understand whether an action has worked as this can be misleading. Rather, see it as a tool that can continually provide useful insights that together with team training can help you to nurture the culture in your practice over time.
It is important that the survey is sent to everyone as it applies equally to all roles and levels across the team. The more people who complete it, the more representative the data! You should aim for at least 60% completion across your team (higher in very small teams) so that it can be considered statistically valid. We will support you by providing templates that can be used to communicate with your team, advice on encouraging completion, together with the necessary links and logins for the survey itself.
